Project background

The Challenge

Read and absorb information

This client needed their interns to read and absorb the information presented in a written Welcome Packet before starting their jobs in a new country. The existing pdf packet was 30 pages of text and bullet points. During onboarding, the trainers realized that the interns were not at all familiar with the information, almost as if they had not even skimmed through it.

The Solution
Rather than simply redesigning the PDF manual with color and arrows to add to the company’s website, I built an interactive online job aid using Rise as a responsive tool that would draw learners in.

To meet the client’s needs, I:
  • Re-purposed the content for a more streamlined development. I reused the client’s pdf packet to reduce development time.
  • Created a resource with easy mobile access. I provided learners a tool with easy access from their phones or any other device,  instantly available before departure, during training and even during their stay.
  • Insured interaction with the content. I included knowledge checks and a quiz to verify that interns were reading and absorbing the content.

In a future phase, I recommend to potentiate the job aid with a scenario/based approach where interns would walk through several real world examples of typical encounters when the resource is vital to use.

Course features

Incorporating real-life information:

I used relevant photos and videos from the developing country and the organization's site to provide context to the learner.  Volunteers can picture themselves participating in the different events and relate to visual stories of former volunteers in different roles. To present the multimedia, I mostly used the Image and Gallery Blocks lesson types from Rise.

I also included links to the satellite street view from Google Maps so learners could virtually explore their site. I incorporated the Labeling Graphic lesson and direct links from Rise.

Using this course feature makes it much easier for learners to read the information as it becomes meaningful for their future jobs.

Providing Choice:

I opened the navigation of chapters and lessons for the learner to choose freely. The course is organized as a reference tool with clear, catchy titles to easily find information.  Also, the learners have the opportunity to review the content using any device at anytime as Rise is a responsive tool.
Having the information at the tip of their fingers, learners are able to reference and apply an enormous amount of information when questions crop up.

Adding knowledge checks:

The client needed verification to ensure that the learners were referencing the information in the welcoming packet, so I decided to include  knowledge checks and a final quiz.

At the end of each chapter, self-evaluation questions allow learners to process information. Using reflective questions, like connecting to their past-experience or visualizations of their new position, supports  long-term memory storage.

I ended the course with a final checklist built in as a quiz to prove accountability. Providing a score in the evaluation encourages the learners to take another look at the content.
